I found writing this blog to be very difficult because the subject is too close to my heart. We all know or in contact with someone who has been diagnosed or is suffering from Alzheimer disease. As you know the mainstream media gets excited about this research or that but according to US and European task force that was published few years ago during the last decade, all Phase III clinical trials on Alzheimer have failed. But there are a lot of work that has been done for prevention of dementia at the first place that has been overlooked by the mainstream media.
Prevention of dementia
But I like to talk to you about a natural solution for prevention of dementia and therapy at the first place. There was a scientific study done that was published in the Journal Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences. There was a two year trial at Oxford University where 156 clients of 70 year old and older who showed signs of cognitive decline and had high Homocystein level. These patients were given Vitamin B6, B12, and folic acid and they had MRI done both at the beginning and at the end of the trial. The study clearly showed that the vitamins reduced the shrinking of the brain associated with Alzheimer by up to 90% and brought down the level of Homocystein way down.. The researchers never even dreamt to see this dramatic results. This study was not highly publicized and it was ignored practically by the media. Homocysteine is made in the body normally due to the production of amino acid called Methionine. It is not normal to have elevated level of it and the elevation results in inflammation which can result in the build-up of plaque in the arteries resulting in heart attack, strokes, and Alzheimer.
I typically test for the nutrient panel and the level of homocystein of my patients specially if they are elderly or show signs of cognitive decline. This could be done for other patients and age groups that are interested for prevention purposes. There are some conditions such as in Thyroid and kidney issues that can be the culprit and they can be fixed by therapy. The value that I consider good is less than 10 micromoles/Liter. Most of the laboratories do have this test. If you have a high homocytein level the reason this could be genetic or due to diet and the lifestyle. If it is genetic, the gene responsible is MTHFR that helps regulate the level of homocystein. If there is a mutation then the level goes up. But depending on the gene and the mutation that could result in the homocystein metabolism and issues with it. Your holistic physician could work with you on getting to the root of the issue by checking the level of homocystein and do the MTHFR genetic testing. Again be diligent and work with your holistic physician to get to the bottom of it.
